With a call to action for leadership and innovation in shaping the future of Papua New Guinea, the National Youth Parliament commenced in Port Moresby this week bringing together 60 young leaders under the theme: “Youth Leading Change through Civic Engagement for Social Impact and Sustainable Development.”
The 60 young leaders were among the successful applicants who will attend a week-long intensive leadership training that calls on young people to be at the forefront of creating innovative solutions for challenges in governance, transparency, accountability, and community development, ultimately guiding Papua New Guinea into a future of social equity, resilience, and prosperity.
Co-facilitated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the financial support of the European Union and the United States Embassy, this program will also see the young leaders imitate a mock parliament and how laws and bills are tabled and passed on the floor of the National Parliament and its roles and functions.
In giving opening remarks, UNFPA Representative Ms. Saira Shameem shared her excitement in continuing the legacy of the National Parliament for the fourth year in a row.
“This is a renewed commitment to democracy, transparency and accountability and I thank the support from all our donor partners, sister agencies and government partners, the National Youth Development Authority and the National Parliament House.”
“To the young people, your voice matters, ensure to use it so that your passion may stand out.”
A similar statement was reiterated by the US Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Ann Marie Yatishock encouraging the young people to think critically and engage deeply with the values of democracy, leadership and global citizenship.
“This experience is more than an exercise; it’s a celebration of your potential to enact change and to connect with each other as allies in advocacy.”
UNDP’s Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Aadil Mansoor emphasized on the leadership skills of listening, collaboration, compromise and integrity and highlighted that while Papua New Guinea’s young population faces numerous challenges including limited access to education and employment, their resilience and innovative spirit must be nurtured.
“Today, we stand united by a shared vision: empowering youth to become informed, engaged, and ethical leaders of tomorrow. The Youth Mock Parliament is not just a simulation; it is a powerful exercise in nation-building.”
“Together, we can build a Papua New Guinea where every young person can lead, thrive, and make a difference. Your creativity, determination, and passion are the driving forces that will build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable nation.
The European Union Ambassador, His Excellency Jacques Fradin in his remarks to the young people spoke on three key topics of dialogue, cooperation and actionable proposals.
“This week will provide you the opportunity to learn from others through open dialogue, the power of collective effort and how cooperation of like-minded individuals can change the world and more importantly, put forward clear proposals that are essential for impactive change, ” Fradin noted.
Fradin concluded by reaffirming the EU's commitment to youth development. “Investing in and working with, by, and for youths is of paramount importance to achieve a legitimate, peaceful, and a democratic society where human rights, gender equality, and the rule of law are respected for all.”
National Youth Development Authority Director-General Mr. Joe Itaki affirmed his organization's support for the young people, urging them to always aim high.
“Forums such as these are to equip you as a leader. It is your determination and motivation that will sustain you in your journey as a leader. Collaborate, cooperate and partner amongst yourself and with us to drive the youth agenda in the country.”
