Papua New Guinea’s population stands at 10, 185, 363. This was announced by the country’s Prime Minister James Marape at the official 2024 National Population Census final figures launch held in November 2025.

The launch of the latest national census results marked a significant milestone for Papua New Guinea (PNG), following a considerable 14-year gap since the last count, which took place in 2011. The necessity for an up-to-date census had become increasingly critical, making it a key priority for the current government. This initiative was driven by the imperative to ensure that every individual residing within PNG's borders is accurately counted and included in the national demographic records.

“This population numbers should guide us to reset the development agenda to strategize and refocus on where and what areas we need to refocus on, where and what areas we need to address to maximize impact on the lives of our people. “

Therefore, it is critical that accurate population numbers are produced that shall become the common denominator for any planning, decision making and resource allocation going forward. “

UNFPA in Papua New Guinea, who has been essential in providing technical expertise, logistical support, and global best practices for census operations, congratulated the Government of Papua New Guinea for its leadership and vision for the future of the country.

UNFPA Representative Ms. Saira Shameem extended congratulations to the National Government, particularly the teams at the district and ward levels.

She underscored the significance of the census results as it revealed the number of (i) women of reproductive ages which are necessary in the design of maternal and infant’s health, (ii) the school age children for building schools and knowing the demand for teachers, (iii) the youth bulge – for understanding and preparing for the demographic dividend which is a window of opportunity for economic growth by investing on the right mix of policies on governance and employment, and children’s and youth’s education, skills, health and well-being; and (iv) the increasing number of the older people which is important for designing a geriatric care and other social protection.

UNFPA is proud to be part of Papua New Guinea's 2024 Census Journey, reaffirming its global commitment as the data agency to support governments in their population exercise.
